“Betsy” and “Tacy” window shopping along the recreated Front Street at the Blue Earth County Heritage Center Museum. Picture from the program “Christmas in Deep Valley”, Nov. 9, 2013.

This was an annual event, as heavily weighted with tradition as a Christmas pudding with plums. As children they had gone with just ten cents apiece to spend. They had visited every store in town, priced everything from diamonds to gum drops, and bought, each one, a Christmas tree ornament.  The last few years, they had been less carefree; they had had real shopping to do. But they never failed to make the trip, savoring Christmas together all up and down Front Street. (Quote from Betsy and Joe by Maud Hart Lovelace)
